Micro Mosaic Necklaces

Each AnneyFriday Mosaic necklace is a one-of-a-kind piece. Anney spends countless hours working with antique dealers around the globe and combing various estate sales to find these unique collectible mosaics. The mosaics are then turned into pendants and set with metals and precious or semi-precious stones that enhance their heirloom quality.

Micro Mosaic as an art form dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Popularized in the early Victorian era by brooches and pins travelers brought home from Italy as keepsakes, these tiny masterpieces have developed into one of the most coveted focal points in modern jewelry design. Made from the “smalti filati” (literally spun enamel) technique, developed by Vatican artisans, a rich tint is mixed with glass which is pulled and spun into pieces ranging generally, from 1 to 4 millimeters in thickness. These “tesserae” are painstakingly arranged into a matrix or pattern, which then actualizes the desired image.

The antique nature of each pendant suggests mosaics will show their age, and we’re glad they do! Natural distressing and aging occur, giving each pendant its own unique characteristics. Necklaces vary in lengths, from 16-28 inches.
